Dashboard dies, but comes back if door opened, ignition restarted or hazards turned on?!

At random times whilst driving all the warning lights come on the dash then everything goes off. All dials go to zero and the dash lights turn off.
I can get them to come back on by either turning off the ignition and back on, opening the door, or turning the hazards on.

The only other symptom is that the fuel gauge can sometimes take ages to get up to the proper reading.

What can be causing this?

I have searched for the answers and so far I have checked, replaced and/or cleaned all the fuses, checked and cleaned the ABS socket, checked and cleaned the main battery earth, and the earth in the drivers foot well.

Try removing the dash and cleaning the connector behind it. Mine had grease in it (correct type for connectors but got dirty) cleaned it out secured it in and it’s been fine ever since. Knock on wood.

Is that the CIM connection behind the steering wheel?
I've cleaned that today. If not, where do you mean and how do I reach it?

Remove the dashboard itself. Quite easy there are videos showing the removal procedure. Only took me 10mins the first time.

Follow this video, no need to remove the steering wheel cover. Yes clean the white connector on both ends the instruments and the wiring with contact cleaner.

Thanks, if cleaning the CIM hasn't worked I'll try that next.

Well, just been out for a drive and it's still doing it.
I'll try the dash connection and let you know.

I cleaned the dash connector a couple of days ago and so far the issue hasn't come back, so it's possibly fixed.

As soon as I had cleaned the connector I noticed that the fuel gauge was quicker to come up to it's position, and it read a higher level than it had done before the clean. This seems to indicate something wasn't right with the connection before, and it has changed for the better. Fingers crossed!
