Default Turned ignition key, no power...

Jumped into veccy (2.2 Direct '06), turned ignition key, engine half turned over then went silent. Dash lights flickering, cabin light flickering, (EMS light flickering), could hear a clicking noise coming from the back then all electrical power vanished (no lights on dash), wont turn over. can't lock car.

Didn't have time to open the bonnet and check for anything, hijacked the wife's toyota and dashed off to work.

No warning lights or symptoms the day before.

Unblocked a drainage channel (just beneath the windscreen) four weeks earlier, as I'd had some water get in and seep under the carpet; there's still some water under the carpet on the rear passenger side, was wondering if this might be a factor.

Suspect a failed alternator... (62000K on the clock)

Any suggestions and possible repair costs?

Good call Tony. Flat battery it was. Jump-started it this afternoon, engine ticks over nicely but shuts off after 10-15mins. Battery voltage jumping up and down, reckon it's best just to buy a new one (about £90). But mightily relieved it's nothing more serious than that. Had already called the stealer's in anticipation.

Dave, I don't have a battery charger, so I'm weighing up the option of buying one versus a brand new battery...

If it shuts down like that, with the voltage jumping up and down, it's deffo the alternator that's shafted

Ouch! Thought I'd dodged a bullet, looks like I should just get it over to the stealer's and get it over with.

What voltage were you getting exactly? Should be at least 14 (14.5 ideally) at idle with engine running and no other electrics on (blower, lights, etc).

Try Euro Car Parts for an alternator, helluva lolt cheaper than the main dealers

Getting 14.5v then it dips to 14/13.8 or.7 and lower before rising for a few seconds then dipping again.
Never fitted an alternator, if I can get the part cheap I might give it a shot.

Deffo sounds like the alternator. Have you driven it a few miles since starting it up?
