Hi R2XPT, just wanted to say a massive thank you for this - I had exactly the same issue and fixed it this morning. The 'popped it back in' for me turned out to involve removing the centre console to get at it properly so took me a couple of hours, luckily I had the Haynes manual to hand. My gear stick is as good as new now too. Really appreciate you sharing the details. Best wishes.
