    I've now found documenation

Main complaint people have about this model is that when hot it will not connect via USB

What specification is the computer you are connecting to?
Is it operating on 32 or 64 bit?
    PC
    Pentium III, 500Mhz equivalent processor
    or higher
    • Windows Vista, 2000 Professional, XP Professional,
    or HP Home Edition
    • 128MB RAM or more as required by operating system
    (256MB recommended)

    Very strange..

I assume the drive is showing up in XP, in which case you could try re-formatting it. Other possibility is that your USB port is not supplying sufficient power, does it have the option for a external power supply.?

It may of course have been returned by someone to the store, prior to your wife buying it, in which case, if no joy I would return it.

edit: went to edit, then waited, and waited!

Looks like you need to format it before use
Right click on the G drive then format

After the first format you might end up only seeing about 50MB of capacity
If this happens, then perform another format
You then might end up seeing 100MB of capacity
Repeat the process until you see the full 500MB of capacity

Looks like people are also reportign issues with this device and SP3

Whatever you do, don't move into clean instal Sata drives, you'll be there a month of sundays trying to figure it out.

I'm suprised windows didn't just ask you if you wanted to format the drive
