    Default Wii--upright or horizontal

Bought the kids (!!) a Wii for Christmas. Obviously comes with the stand to store it vertically (bought another that charges the controllers as well).

However, relative has just had to send his Wii back as it was not reading discs. Came back from Nintendo with advice to only store it horizontally, as keeping it vertical has led to the disc read fault.

I'm confused. They supply a stand to keep it vertical, then advise against it.

    Not heard of that before.

Ours has always been horizontal, and I know plenty of people who have had them vertical for months with no problems.

The only thing I can think of is, as its basically a slot-load laptop drive in it, that the retention spring mught not be man enough so it starts to sag.

    oooh... interesting.
We store our Wii vertically and it often can't read the disk. Will try it horizontally and see if this makes a difference...

Tell him to write to them and ask for a brand new replacement. They've admitted that it doesn't work in the manner which it is designed to, so shouldn't have any problem with getting it swapped.

My girlfriend has occasional trouble with her Wii not reading discs, but she's not tried having it horizontally...

Don't see why it wouldn't me an easy fix for Nintendo... There are enough vertical DVD drives around which work fine...

Eh, sounds like rubbish. Our has been on the wee (pun not intended) stand since we got it back when they came out first. No problems at all.

Mine is horizontal and I sometimes get the Disc error screen, but not very often.
