I'm thinking about changing the Astra, need more space so I've been considering buying a new or used, diesel or petrol Vectra. I'm weighing up the pros and cons of each and tonight I thought I'd have a look at the new VED groups/rates.

Its late, my head hurts and I'm a tad confused. Have a look at this govt website:
http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/tax_ve...xcise_duty.htm

From Table A & B: If I buy a new car in Jan 2009 that emits 154g/km of CO2 then the VED will be £145 and £150 in Jan 2010.

Again from Table A & B: If I buy a new car in Jan 2009 that emits 173g/km then the VED will be £170 and £175 in Jan 2010.

The bit that is confusing me most is regarding table D. The way I read it is:
If you buy a new car on 1st April 2010 that emits 154g/km then first year VED = £155.
If you buy a car on 1st April 2010 that emits 173g/km then first year VED = £250, I'm assuming the tax will then drop the following year to the 2010-11 rate + chancellors rise (If any) which in this case is £180 (+ chancellors rise).
If you buy a car on 1st April 2010 that emits 201g/km then first year VED = £550, I'm assuming the tax will then drop the following year to the 2010-11 rate + chancellors rise (If any) which in this case is £245 (+ chancellors rise).

Am I reading this all correctly?
