    Default cigarettes off display?

    that'll stop them eh?
i'm an ex smoker and hate the things, but banning it from pubs was one thing, but taking them off display? for goodness sake - how's that going to help? more nanny state shenanagins. i am such an awkward git, that when there was a national no smoking day, i used to smoke more. even though i planned to give them up some time, i wasn't going to be told to do so by the govenment and/or media. i wouldn't be surprised if sales don't go up a little because of this.
before you think - who cares? it won't be long before something you enjoy is being banned. i like a drink of wine at weekends - that's next. how often is the demon drink mentioned these days? daily! [wish i'd copyrighted the phrase 'binge drinking!'].
putting lads mags on the top shelf? ffs! getting a hard on more than once a week will be banned next because it's bad for your blood pressure [being fat will long since have been made illegal - pie and chips? them were the days...].
i'll tell you something else that needs banning - carrier bags.
what? you mean they've done that already???

The fags will be under the counter then?....
or hidden in plainwrapping on the top shelf out of reach?.......

It won't stop the smokers.............what will be next, only being able to buy them from dealers at secret meetings in dark alleyways

i think sometimes we're becoming more victorian in attitude as we move forward. at least, that's what they want us to do.

Well I've been off the fags for 12 years, and I still get that "itch" when I see the wonderous range presented behind the counter. To the point where I buy a pack the very odd time, by the time I get to the car I don't want them and end up giving them to someone who smokes.

It's all about temptation - if they weren't there I wouldn't be tempted. Same would apply to many others I'm sure.

I laughed out loud at that paragraph!

I have to agree though. I'm a non-smoker, always have been, and hate smoking with a passion. I shouted 'Hurrah' when they banned smoking from pubs, restaurants etc. as it meant no longer did I have to walk out stinking of smoke (and Christ knows what else breathed in) or have to choose where I ate based on if they had a no smoking policy.

However, having cigs etc. out of site in the aim to stop people buying them? Come on Government - people just go up to the counter and still ask for them!!

All it'll mean is that the others in the queue will wait longer while the assistant digs around under the counter trying to find the damn things as there won't be as much space under there/laid out easily to find!

EDIT: Just saw the above post. I suppose the temptation thing is a valid point - especially if you're an ex-smoker or in the process of trying to give up.

It will also cost the shop keepers for new cabinets etc and displays.

Makes NO sense to me. At least it won't happen for 3 years

I guess that answers the question. Must admit when I gave up there were several times normally in pubs when I was very close to buying some more when I saw them behind the bar. Very weak looking back but giving up can be a tight rope affair in the first few months.

Not saying it's right but they say that where this has happened smoking has reduced.
