Default 3.2 GSI Thrust/Clutch bearing Question.

    Hi Folks,
Just started to notice a slight 'whining' in 1st gear (only). Today I can clearly hear what I think is the clutch release/thrust bearing. Its a 'low' spinning noise that goes away when I press the clutch.

Does anyone know if this is purely down to the thrust bearing or could it also be a potential gearbox problem (gulp!)? If I get the thrust bearing changed, should I change the clutch at the same time (due to the job being really difficult)? Any ideas of costs ???

    Frightened !!!

    Many Thanks.

Could be worn input shaft splines on first gear..?Does it engage gears without crunching with the other gears.

    Default Thrust Bearing/Clutch WarrantyWise

Hi, thanks for replying, I can engage al of the gears very easily, there are no noises, its just that I can hear a 'slight whinning' noise whilst driving in first gear. Pretty sure the thrust bearing is worn tho (It's just happened whilst I have left the car outside a hotel for 3 days in the cold).

If it is the thrust bearing, should I replace the clutch at the same time
(if the job is really difficult) ? Do you think the g/box will need to be looked at ?

I have a warranty with WarrantyWise so will try these fella's out, not holding my breath !

Anyone had any joy with WarrantyWise ?

If the noise goes away when you press the clutch, then it is unlikely to be the release bearing, as the release bearing is stationary until you press the clutch pedal and bring it into contact with the clutch release.

Sounds like input / lay shaft bearing on the gearbox to me.

A worn thrust or release bearing becomes noisy when the pedal is depressed, and you say the whinning is heard when first gear is selected.

    A few questions..
?Does the noise disappear after the engine has warmwd up to full temp.
?Have you noticed any oil leaks anywhere under the car around the gearbox area.

Sounds like the ist gear lay shaft splines to me as stated earlier.

Had the car looked at, mechanic has confirmed it is the thrust bearing. He said it's not that bad (agree as it has just started making the noise). The whinning in 1st is very hard to hear, he has suggested leaving it for a while so we can state that its definately the gearbox, then it's strip-down time. WIll have to replace clutch at same time (as its very difficult to get at), a new fly wheel quoted from the Stealers is £900 !!!!
