Interesting idea, don't know the answer - surely possible but haven't heard of anyone doing this on the forum.
Probably not as simple as it first may seem (rarely is with modern cars), someone will be along soon enough to give you a definite answer.
not really sure on the 2.2 direct but i know on the 2.2 dti you can use the saab 2.2tid 6 speed box
Vocky fitted a 6 speed to his 2.2 VX220 from his 5 speed. Can be done but not really worth it on a Vectra. Fit bigger wheels and/or larger profile tyres and get the speedo sorted.
Think you could fit the F40 close ratio of the 2.0T, but how it would effect the performance I can't say.
I know what you mean about always thinking on motorways that you feel there should be another gear. I dont think I could go back now to a 5 speed box especially if one does a lot of long distance motorway driving which I do.
I personally think it would be a better option to hang on until its time to swap the car, with the price of vecs and other cars too for that matter coming down so fast, I just dont think its worth the hassle and cost to swap the box. This is my first car that has 6 gears, and you are right of course it helps tremendously with the fuel consumption and the overall quietness of the car on motorways etc. VX also seem to have the gearing just right on the later 6 speed vec-c's.
Noticed the other day when I drove the sons Merc that his car had 7 gears,I never knew they made normal cars with 7, shows how much I'm out of touch.
I had the chance of a 57 petrol 2.0 Ltr SRI the other day which I was bidding for on Ebay, but stopped when it went over 6K. I notice that car had 6 gears too, all the standard petrol 1.8's only have 5 I think.
I should have bid a bit higher as it went for the bargain price of £6112.00
Absolutely as new too with just 14k on it.![]()
