    Default Wheel Bearings

Hi guys, just a quick question, dads Vectra had a droaning noise coming from the O/S/F wheel area, hence we took it to arnold clark vauxhall - as I work for 1 of their other branches and get trade price parts/labour - anyway mechanic went a road test with my dad and knew right away it was the wheel bearings needing sorted (the cars done 101,000 miles as a taxi) so we arrange to have them replaced.

get a phone call later on that day from reception staff to tell us that wheel bearings arent available separately, they come complete as part of the whole hub, hence we'd need to replace the whole hub to sort out the gubbed wheel bearings, its a 54 plate 2.0 DTI diesel

just wondered if vauxhall were at it and telling us porkies to exert more cash from us as I personally have never heard of anyone having to buy a new hub just to rectify broken/worn wheel bearings

As far as i am aware mate, it true. You have to get a whole hub just to change the wheel bearing's!

its a terrible design in that case then, but no doubt 1 vaux conjured up with the idea of making as much as possible out of a common fault thats usually cheap.

I nearly choked when dad said it was costing 200quid inc vat with my staff discount applied for wheel bearings.

the wheel bearing unit is bolted onto the hub carrier by three bolts and on some models dependant on spec also has the ABS speed sensor built in.
They are about £134 pounds from Vauxhall but any good motor factors will sell an SKF wheel bearing which is the exact same part just in a different box for about half that.

its an easier job to do rather than messing around with inner/outer races and bearings !

Default AA site that tells about wheel bearing recalls

Hi, I have a 2.0 diesel estate and there is droning from back end. Mind you it has now done 119k and it is a 53 reg 04 car and it has been droning for 10k miles.
I did some searching and there is a recall for cars between certain VIN numbers - so you may want to look at that site - i think i searched for 'vectra recalls' and you may get the work done free of charge.
