Vectra 2006 Diesel 1.9 CDTI - Randomly Stalling
Hi folks - I've had a Vectra 2006 Diesel 1.9 CDTI since October last year which gave me no bother until a couple of months ago when I was driving back from a drive which was about 20 miles, on the way back the car started completely stalling in the middle of the road, If i turned the ignition on again I could get it going again and again but it eventually completely gave up a couple of miles on and I had to park up in a street. I was incredibly busy at that time and had to leave it there for a few days, I came back to test the car and low and behold it started and hasn't gave me any bother again until the weekend passed. I did a 40 mile drive all good, but the next morning going to the shop the stalling happened in the exact same pattern and I have to leave it there for an hour or so but after that the car was fine. I drove home the next day around 35 miles and then the car did the same thing, same pattern, I left it for another 30 minutes and then It let me drive another 10 miles home. There seems to be no triggers - does anyone have any ideas? My car knowledge is limited and I'm a student so so is my funds. I have ODIN and will post the error codes in the post below. Thank you.

did you actually lookup the fault codes you've found? anyway if i was you i would be looking into cleaning the UEC and the cable on top of the ABS... once you've done that and erased the codes you'll have to go for a drive to see if it is sorted. PS you can change that main relay to make sure it is working right but they aren't cheap so try to clean the contact points on it first.

Thanks for the advice. Tried everything you said then cleared the codes and took it for a drive. All was good for about 5 miles, but after that on the way home it started all over again. Got very lucky that I was near my house and was able to keep restarting it to get round the corner. But it's now completely done - won't even start at all. From doing a lot of digging online a common problem seems to be "a faulty anti-shudder valve on the inlet manifold, which was closing and starving off the ignition and restarting the engine" with the suggestion to check for faulty flaps in the valve. This seems to have solved it for a few people with the same symptoms as me so will try that next once I get my head around how to actually do it.

It isn't that hard to remove the valve body on your engine... 9 out of 10 times it is caused by dirt and sometimes the valve movement is restricted because the gears are covered in oil causing a short so it closes during driving.. so you'll need to open that black plastic casing that is connected to it.
Ps when it closes the engine doesn't get air so that is why it doesn't want to start. A good dosage of electrical cleaner or brake cleaner will help cleaning the oil out

Opened up the valve and it was caked it oil. Gave it a good cleaning and checked it was able to move. Still no joy. Car wont start at all, just clicking noise and ABS/Battery/Airbag light, though all other electrics are working. Tried a different battery, no joy still same issue. Could it be the starter motor? Thank again for your help.

If you mean clicking noise when you turn the key... well than it must be the starter...

Got an auto spark out - he did a diagnosis and found that the starter and battery were fine. The issue is that the fusebox isn't getting power to the ECU so the problem is likely either a faulty fusebox or ECU. He set up a power line from the battery to the ECU - that got the engine ticking over now, but the accelerator doesn't rev at all. Fault codes are:
P1120 - Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor 1 High Input
(07) - Present
P1625 - Main Relay opens too late
(57) - Present
I took the whole UEC apart, including circuit board and fuses and all, and put the hairdryer over it all and gave it a good spray again of contact cleaner but no joy. He recommended to get a second hand like for like UEC off ebay this week and replacing it to see if that fixes it and if it doesn't we'll go from there and test the ECU.

I took off the ECU connector and gave it a good squirt of contact cleaner and now the accelerator is working again so the car is driveable with a wire from battery to ECU (but not without). Accelerator pedal error is now gone, but the relay error remains. It clears if I clear it and only returns if i remove the temporary fix and replace it. Without the temporary fix of the wire from the battery to the ECU I'm unable to connect diagnostics as there is no power to the ECU. The price of a full like for like ECU kit was basically the same as a fusebox on ebay so i got the full kit for £40 delivered. It includes relays and a fusebox so I'll have them in a few days and can test the relay, followed by the fusebox (UEC). If that doesn't work then I'll check for a bad wire from the UEC to the ECU before looking at replacing the whole ECU as it seems a bit of a nightmare to do. Thanks for the help folks.
