Default Engine De-greaser & Major Cleaning?

Well I have my trusty toilet brush, but nothing good enough to shift the Oil/Carbon/general mess at the moment...

Tried to give it a little once over on the CDTI yesterday, but after a few years of neglect its going to take a good few hours of stripping and detailing...

I'm going to need a lot of product, but whats the best, or cheapest to use, anyone have any home made or cheap alternatives to "Gunk" etc?... It basically looks like an un-maintained old tractor engine at the min and probably going to need a few liters of whatever I end up using, just don't want to break the bank on it...

    Any suggestions?

Ive found G101 works out the best value for money. Halfords have their cleaning stuff on 3 for 2 at the moment and gunk is pretty good, if smelly stuff. 2.5lt is £10.99 according to their website.

I've used a bit of carb cleaner etc, but it really is caked on... Might just get the larger GUNK then and work my way back up to the other cleaners, that's not a bad price for 2.5ltr, my local motor place must just be a rip off, but then again they even over charge for the colored combustible that is Redex!

Last time I cleaned my bay I used some left over alloy wheel cleaner with a selection of paint brushes, followed by a quick snow foam lol, it worked surprisingly well!
