Default Any MS Excel gurus here?

Ive made my own spread sheet to chart the weights of our newborn puppies and wanted to add a formula that displays the increase in weight from the 1st birth weight. The spread sheet ive done is below

    puppy.jpg

Can anybody help me to write the correct formula that will show the increase from day 1, not sure where i can put the result so suggestions for location would also be good.

Thanks for any advice in advance

    cheers

    Hi

Step 1 - remove the G from the weight columns so excel recognises the value as a number

Step 2 - insert another column after the puppy column, e.g. insert a column after B, C, D etc

Step 3 - insert the formulae =B4-$B$3 into the new column, this will show the difference from birth weight to current weight

    A B C
    1 Date Puppy
    2 weight in g Increase
    3 23-Mar 100
    4 24-Mar 105 5
    5 25-Mar 110 10

Ok, so you want a formula displaying the increase in weight between birth and whatver the highest value you put on the same column ? We can use this, as I guess a growing baby is unlikely to lose weight...

    1) Remove all the units ("G") from the cells, keep only numeric values, as Excel can't calculate from text ! If it's corrrect, all numbers should automatically align to the right. If they stay aligned to the left, then they're still considered as text, not numbers : check there's no quote inserted in front of them.

    2) In the B30 cell, you'll put this formula :

    =max(b6:b29)-b5

Then of course, copy-paste the formula to the next columns.

You may put a "$" in front of the coordinate you want to stay independant from the move when copying to other cells. For instance, if you intend to extend your spreadsheet past row # 30, you may use =max(b$6:b29)-b$5 instead, so copying the fomula to row # 40 will keep it working. Inserting rows in the middle of the table will also keep both versions working anyway, just expanding the range towards the bottom.
