rolleyes Winter and Flat Battery time

Wifes Siggy 2.0Dti is doing my head in. Approx just over a year ago wife called me out as her car had a flat battery. As the car was only on its 2nd battery and 8 yrs old bought a Halfords battery as that was the nearest supplier open on a Sunday Morning.

Approx 3 months ago she had the flat battery problem again went out started it with jump leads ok. like a P**** I broke the connector on the Parrot CK3200 LS Colour Display and haven't managed to win one on EBay yet. Since then we have had at least 4 occasions with the battery going flat (It was only 10.8v) I have re-charged off the car and OK for a couple of weeks.
Checked Battery regularly its between 12.4v to 12.6v static connected engine and ignition off. Checked voltage with engine running no load equals 14.4v and with absolutely every thing on its an Elite its down to 13.7v For over last 1.5 weeks the car has started very easily with starter motor throwing the car around the engine if you know what I mean.

This morning wife went out on her normal Wednesday run car started absolutely fine I was there when she started it. She drove it for 4 miles and parked up outside her friends for approx. 3 hours. Went out to car tried to start it, her words it revved really slowly then just clicking noise. Just started it ok from a Ford 1.6 Escort Ghia (S Plate) and only 16k from new. Had to leave jump leads on with Ford engine running
It Started ok. Drove car Back 4 miles left it outside for 3 hours and it started. What the * is going on.

Its owned by a 82yr old Lady when she first bought it about 14yrs ago she said there was something wrong with the engine and had a complete new Ford engine fitted. It does about 300 miles per year now unfortunately it is an automatic and the road tax is over £200 per year. It always has to have a full tank and I think the wife drives down to the garage when it needs filling up.

Still back to Wifes Siggy will look at those earth cables but it does'nt make sense with sudden voltage drop on a no load check.

Sorry fella. Just been doing some eBay delving and my spare screen seems to be one for a 9100 (ie, no controls built in, just a display).

Guess you are going to need to keep looking .... damm.

    Cheers

    - Just had this with my neighbours Corsa 1.2 - started fine some times and then every third/fourth time the dash lights would flash and the throttle body, fuel relay and ecu would be clicking like morse code coming in - battery was in poor condition so replaced that but just the same problem with a new one fitted. Put a new earth lead on from the negative post onrto the engine block and problem solved - after a local garage had told them it wanted a new ecu! You could also consider starter motor connections.

Many thanks for that information that is pointing me in the right direction, what is throwing me is the fact that voltage went down to 11.2vdc and then 10.6vdc, Did you make the new earth lead up ???

Hi, To test if it was an earth problem I used a jump start lead from the negative terminal of the battery and clipped the other end to one of the lifting eyes on the engine block and it started fine - as a temporary fix I made an earth lead up using heavy duty cable and bolted it to the negative terminal and to the engine block. To make a proper job of it I got one of theses from Halfords http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...egoryId_255205 and made a tidier job. As I say it was for a neighbour and no problems since . If it was my own car I would have put another earth strap underneath the car bolted to the chassis and the block - you can't have too many earthing points. Halfords do theses straps in different lengths.
If you do have a poor earth it could be that the alternator is unable to charge your battery fully - hence your problems.
Hope this helps and you get it sorted.
