    Vehicle : Vectra

    Trim : Breeze

    Engine : CDTI 150

    Year : 05

    Mileage : 137K

Default I have my Vectra Breeze CDTI 150

I have been the proud owner of a 05 Breeze for 3 weeks... Unfortunately I have owned it for 7 weeks.

    AHHHGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!

its only doing 35mpg and is costing me a load in fuel.

    I have have so far:

    cleaned EGR valve
    cleaned rhrottle body
    cleaned boost sensor

    also it has been
cutting out inntermitantl( wiring harness repair cured it after 3 visits to the selling dealer.
    would not start.
snapped a coil after coming off my drive and ripping a new tyre apart.

swirl valve actuator fell off. I have glued the actuators at the 10 o'clock position, still poor performance and mpg. I'm saving for a new Inlet manifold....

This is the first car I have owned as my own after 20 years of company cars. I thought I was buying a sensible family car and instead I have a heap of poo that I detest driving. if it gets any worse I will have to start driving my wife's Piccasso..

Why have you taken it back to the dealer to fix something's but not the manifold, but now you've glued it, they probably may not touch it now, but would have been covered.

First off what type of driving are you doing? If its all around town and short drives then you are unlikely to get above 35mpg. A diesel only comes into its own when used for high mileage. Mine does 48+ on long trips but will drop well below 40 mpg on local trips.

What mileage is currently on the car?
As Dan says why did you not take the car back to the dealers regarding the swirl flaps? Also did the dealer replace the spring under warranty? Did you replace the springs in pairs as well?

Insist the selling dealer fixes ALL the faults...7 weeks after buying it,it should not be going wrong
have a talk to trading standards if they refuse
Trying to fix it yourself may not help your case but you should get somewhere
I would not have touched it myself once it went wrong...it would have gone straight back and i would have demanded a full repair or refund...and a car while they try to fix the new one

Unless it was sold as seen, they would be liable.

There's no such thing as "sold as seen" in the UK. There are "trade sales", which are cars sold within the trade, trader to trader but you can't exempt someone from their statutory rights if you are selling a car as part of your business. The trader is always liable under the SoGA.

The only place "sold as seen" really comes in, is when selling privately, however that is more 'caveat emptor' than sold as seen.

Incidentally, OP - how does your temperature gauge look? My thermostat has failed (stuck open) so on a run, the temp is dropping off the scale. This is hurting my economy badly - I'm only getting about 33-35mpg round the doors so it might be worth having yours checked. If your gauge drops off the scale when driving, the stat has probably gone.

Apparently, even a private sale can be covered by the sale of goods act....if you buy a car described as in mint condition and the thing is a rotten heap, you can get trading stadards involved...a right faff but they're there for your protection

It's not strictly the SoGA that covers you in that case unfortunately. A private seller only really has two obligations when selling a car - 1: They have entitlement to do so (ie they're they legal owner of that car) and 2: that the car is 'as described'.

If you find out a car isn't 'as described' (could be something like the advert states that all the belts have been changed, however on inspection the timing belt is falling to bits and is obviously not new), the general accepted way to deal with it is to contact the seller first. If they refuse to assist ("private sale mate, I daaant owe you nuffink!!"), issue them a letter before action (14 days to stump up the cost of rectifying the car to the grade as specified in the advert), if nothing back, send them a final letter giving 7 more days to stump up or it'll go to court, then ultimately - if still no joy, issue a small claim at your local court for the money.

If you want to be extra vindictive check to see if they own their house on the Land Registry, and then if you win in court, apply for a charging order against their property. It's a bit more hardcore than 'just' a CCJ as it then secures the debt to you on their property.
