EGR Valve

Hi Guys,
Lent my Veccy 1.8 petrol to my neighbour as his Focus had died. He went to Birmingham and had engine probs. AA towed him to garage and they fitted new EGR valve which I have ended up paying for £150 ouch. I have the old one and it just needed a clean and although engine is running O.K. the mpg is terrible now and keep getting code for rich mixture through 1st Oxygen sensor and then it runs rough. Checked with my vaux com and it clears code O.K. but checked EGR valve and it says inactive and can't find how to activate it with vauxcom.
Anyone any ideas how to reactivate it without Tech2
Help Please.

What year is your Vec as most 1.8s don't have EGR valve

It will only say active when it is energised by ECU. It is not active all the time

Took it for a run down the bypass but inactive all the way from 30 - 60, don't think its active at any speed.
With my Vaux com, if I reset ecu, does it take back to factory settings??
