Default Sidelight Bulb Comparison - MTEC 501 v Philips Blue Vision

Had my MOT last week, so had popped my standard sidelight bulbs back in just to be on the safe side. Usually I have a set of MTEC 501s fitted, which to be honest, I've never really been that impressed with in terms of their brightness.

Have no interest in ending up with issues with strobing LEDs, so had a look about to see what other options I had by way of "conventional" bulbs. After a bit of "umming and aahhing" I decided to take a punt on a pair of Philips Blue Vision bulbs.

Got around to fitting them this evening, and popped in one MTEC 501 and one Blue Vision bulb for a comparison. Driver's side is the MTEC 501, passenger side is the Blue Vision:

Im sure you will can see that it's instantly obvious that the Blue Vision bulb is far far brighter, so that's a winner as far as I am concerned.

The next pic shows the dipped beam on as well, which are Osram Nightbreakers. The colour of the Blue Vision sidelights pretty much matches up with those perfectly. (The MTEC 501s have a definite bluey white tinge to them in comparison, hard to tell from the pic I know):

Overall, I'm pleased with the new Blue Vison bulbs. Just thought I'd share in case anybody else thinks their MTEC 501s are rubbish and fancies something a bit brighter but doesn't want LEDs.

Sounds like what I'm after! Hate the strobing. Cheers!

Who uses sidelights to provide light? I wasnt sure they did alot anyway and the only purpose of mtec 501's is for the colour to be same to match HID headlights. If you dont have hids/xenons then there is no point having mtecs. Im pretty glad they are not bright as then the projector xenon ball with hids looks better.

Well, can't speak for anybody else, but if it's slightly dull or drizzly etc. during the day, I will often stick just my sidelights on so that I am more visible to other road users. I don't put them on to see where I'm going, I put them on so other folk know I'm there. To that end, it's better if they are a bit brighter than the MTEC 501s.

Can't disagree about the colour comment. Whereas I do like the bluey white colour of the MTEC bulbs, they aren't entirely in keeping with normal filament type bulbs.

They look good! The vec must have the lowest emitting sidelights in a car I've ever owned! How much were the bulbs?

Try a bluevision bulb next to a normal 501 bulb, not much different.

For something bright, you want to try a 10w 501 sidelight bulb, they are far brighter

Mtecs look smart in the rear plate lights IMO but I will agree as sidelights there a bit gash.
