Smile How many amps should it be?

Following up from my earlier alternator post ive now removed it from the car and noticed its 100amps. After looking about it would appear that every listed replacement is either 120 or 140 amps? I reckon mine has been replaced by a previous owner on the cheap and its completely the wrong alternator.

    parts numbers on it are 0124 325 172 and 13 229 990

looks these numbers up and it comes back as a 120amp, odd.

So which do i need as im really stumped here a 120 or a 140 amp? My car is a 2008 sri cdti 150

secondly while i was removing it the plug on the back of it has 2 terminals but only 1 wire (blue with white tracer) is this right?

ill be very grateful if anyone can help as i need the car back on the road asap, 4 mile walk to work isnt fun at -3

I think you will find the original was 100A. 120 or 140A as a replacement will be fine (as I answered in your other post I fitted a 140A in my car).

Can't help with the plug as my car does not have Bosch alternator.

Our 55 Reg Facelift Z18XE petrol Club spec Vectra has a 100amp Bosch Alternator - a cow to identify - small swivel head torch & my wife's Vanity Mirror - yet the Publicity Brochure tells it is fitted with a 120amp Alternator (& also the equivalent diesels) ...

It's not been changed - we've had the car since it was 8 months old & less than 4k miles on the clock....
& Second hand alternators on Ebay for the 'Vectra C 1.8 Petrol' cars also seem vary..100amp or 120amp being listed....

Perhaps it what was available on the stores shelf at the time it was assembled.....( It was assembled in Germany according to the VIN number...) .

    Cheers

Diesel cars need a stronger alternator than petrol ones (the starter drains a lot of current because of the diesel engine very high compression. Then apart for the ECU and injectors, a diesel engine will autoburn and won't use any electricity). 120 or 140 Amps should be fine, the higher the better. 100 Amps models are aimed at petrol engines only.

Current is consumed by the devices, not actually produced by the alternator unless asked to. I mean it delivers only the current that the devices will drain, and nothing more. The current limit for any electrical generator only means the maximum it can stand before burning, so if you've got the choice and have the money, just choose the highest rated one.

Following the indicated part number on the eBay offer, I ended there :

    http://www.partsbase.org/parts/gen-93191922/

So this one was a 140 Amps model (not surprising, as it was said to fit the 1.9 CDTi).
