    Default broadband problem?

right i'm with sky for broadband and it used to be ok 16mb
but last few weeks its been down to between 1 mb and 6mb
    the router webpage says
    DownStream Connection Speed 18702 kbps

but a speed test says i'm getting 5110 kbps

so why the difference , sky are hopeless , there escalating it aparently .trying to find the problem .

    so if i'm right
the router is getting about 18mb but the throughput is only 5mb

    how does that work .?

Are you connected directly to the router or is it through WIFI? It is possible your router is on its last legs. Ask Sky for a new one.

    Check the obvious things.

If the router isn't plugged into the BT Master Socket, then plug it in there. If the Master Socket is the newer NTE5 type with the split faceplate, unscrew the lower portion of the faceplate and you can plug directly into the BT test point which is behind that. Any household wiring "should" be connected to the part of the faceplate that you are then bypassing, so effectively rules that out as a potential issue.

Dont assume the filter is ok just because the broadband is working a bit. Swap it out for a new one, or a known good one. Also leave any phones disconnected to see if it helps.

If the above doesn't help at all, I would suggest resetting the router to its default settings. This is usually done via a small button located on the router that you need to push with a paper clip or similar.

If you still have no success, then trying a different router would be the next option. Unfortunately with Sky, you really have to use one of their supplied routers. If you can't beg, steal or borrow one, I'd certainly try brassing your case with Sky and see if they will send you one of their nice new SR101 hubs.

Mmm, I'm also with Sky and have been having the same issue, I normally get 3 mb (distance from exchange) and over Christmas it dropped to 2mb BUT the upload speed rose to 796. I called them and I had them fiddle with the settings and managed to get 3.8mb for a day or so, it's now back down to 2.5mb and I feel another call coming on.
Give them a call, tell them it's happened before and that last time they fiddled with the settings and sorted out.
My local exchange is meant to be getting infinity 2 next month, if it does, Sky better get my setup ASAP.

A lot of it may come down to how many users they have sharing the available bandwidth. If your exchange is due to be upgraded soon, it certainly supports that possibility.
