    Default thick black smoke cdti.

hi all, as title my car (cdti120) kicks out thick black smoke when i boot it, more than is normal i think. What should i be looking at to cure the problem or is this normal?? Seems to be worse in second gear.
Only had the car for two months but the diesel fumes smell quite strong aswell, much more so than the picasso hdi i had, is this normal?
    thanks.

What mileage has the car done? when was the last oil change? what type of oil, semi or fully synth? and how does the car generally drive? Is this a new symptom or has it always been a smoker since bought?

A few questions to start to narrow down the thinking,,,

I think i'm right in saying that all the facelift diesels have a dpf, so there shouldn't be much, if any smoke. Do the fumes smell in the cab or just from the exhaust?

hi, no dpf on mine i believe, checked the code on the door plate as mentioned in another thread. No fumes in the cabin, just seems strong outside the car.

Check the boost sensor, intercooler pipes from turbo to manifold and check air filter as well.

Boost sensor is likely to be gunged up with crap so the engine is over-fuelling! Other sensors to check are the MAF which I think is attached to the airbox?

It's deffo over fuelling, check all the pipework & intercooler for any tell tale signs of a split

Take plastic cover off engine, remove the insulation, then look for the inlet manifold (on the back of the engine) and you should find a sensor in the middle of the manifold, reasonably big with an oval plug on it, secured to the manifold with a bolt. If you find it, remove it and if it is gunged up blast it with carb cleaner.

I think there is a how to guide on the forum somewhere with pictures, have a look!
