Default Diesel fume smell at start up

When I start the car quite often I get a diesel fume smell at start up (Can smell it through the heater vents).

Only thing I could find was one of the breather hoses that goes into the black canister under the inlet manifold isn't as tight as I thought it should be (It just pushes into the canister).

Are we talking about fumes like from a can of diesel or exhaust gasses? If it's fumes, you must have a diesel leak obviously. Exhaust gasses could be comming from a break in the exhaust system, a knackered gasket, one of the manifold nuts/dowels working loose, a cracked manifold...

Leaking EGR system is favourite (if it's an exhaust gas smell). They tend to get taken to bits quite frequently and diesels use EGR at start-up, unlike petrol engines.

Ive got the same problem, and the fumes smell continues through the vents when im using the heater, im suspecting a leak on the swirl valves on the inlet manifold

sometimes on a frosty day, i've obviously got blowers on full to defrost,

if the wind is blowing fumes back towards front of car, they'll be sucked back in through the venting system...

i'd also check EGR gaskets and make sure that bolts are tightened fully, although if there is a leak in the egr system, i'd expect some reduction in performance as well

Spent 4.5hours in the car going nowhere other day cos of the snow chaos, nearly was gased, had to use recirc' on the vents.
Had a nosey under the bonnet yesterday while engine running, cant smell fumes above EGR, but can above inlet manifold, put some washing up liquid over the far left valve and it was bubbling.
