engine missfire diesel

hi all for a couple of weeks now ive had trouble with my headlights flickering, when driving they flicker loads and are quite dim on the road, when static the engine has a slight miss and when looking at the clock on the dash it goes dim then bright then dim, i think its a miss in the engine but dont know where to start to look
dont know if this is common
any ideas? car is a 54 plate 1.9 cdti 8 valve

Hi,
You could have 2 issues.
Firstly the flickering headlights are probably due to an issue with the alternator (this is fairly common), but check the drive belt and tensioner for wear.
As far as the 'miss' goes, could be caused by the volts drop or sticky injector.
Once you've got the problem with lights sorted try running some injector cleaner through.

It sounds like you are running out of electricity. Either you alternator is playing up or battery has come to the end of its life. When was the battery last changed?

battery not changed while ive owned car so last two years really and the lights only really flicker when im driving weird
