1.8 starting & Knocking

Hi I have been having problems starting my 53 plate 1.8 petrol vectra C It turns over for ages before catching. Now today its developed a knocking, more like pinking when accelerating under load.

Any Ideas ?

Is the timing belt ok? and the timing

Yeah seems to run smooth enough. Just re installing my Opel com SW to check but last time I looked it was clear.

Oh one other thing although it runs smooth the idle speed hunts between 500 and about 900 rpm

It sounds to me as if the throttle body could do with a good clean. Mine 'hunted' for while, and cleaning the TB cured it.It wasn't to the same extent as your, but it was very noticeable.

When I had not had my vec-c 1.8 long it started to hunt between 600/1000 rpm,it was on 57,000 miles, a good shot of injector cleaner sorted this out, perhaps I was lucky as your problem could be a lot of things, I now use injector cleaner almost every fill. its on 77,000 miles now and never had a this problem again.
