Default So this is what a short run does to a diesel

We move house on the 8th Jan, taking our daily commute from a 40 mile round trip down to about 2 miles.

3 weeks later, our 2.2dti feels flat as a fart, sounds like an old tranny van and the mpg is down to 30! It's heart breaking to drive now.

Saving grace is that we're visiting my parents at the weekend so hopefully a good (fast road) run out should give the engine a clear out!

Sounds like it needs a good old fashioned Italian Tune Up

My mpg is reading 60mpg on the dual carriageway at 2k revs in top,now that i have removed the dpf
How true the reading is i don't know, but it seem's less effortless when pulling the car along now

Sounds about right, for a 2 mile journey
The engine will rarely get up to temperature
The typical average speed will be very low, consequently reduced mpg

Hence why for such journeys petrol works out the cheaper option

It's probably down to the ECU learning that the car isn't being driven hard. I've noticed with mine that if I drive it gently for a few weeks then the get up and go....erm gets up and leaves.

After taking it out for a good run the performance usually returns

I reset the dpf so it thinks there is a new one fitted
And that 60mpg is only a dual carriageway by the way,and the computer could be out because of my tuning box being fitted

bigdave, even a small petrol would hate doing a short journey like that, some time ago I had use of an old nissan micra it would do 36mpg on my 26 mile round trip to work, then my job changed, only a 4.5 mile round trip mpg droped to 22 mpg,, your engine would be running cold all week not good for any car even worse for your 2.2 oil burner,
