Long Brake Pedal Distance

Hi,

So I finally got around to servicing the vectra and I also changed all discs/pads and bled new fluid around. I went out for a drive but the brakes really weren't up to much. They are almost the same as before which isn't too odd considering the old parts weren't in terrible condition.

But I was expecting some difference and there is almost none? The brake pedal used to travel quite far down before you 'felt' the brakes being applied. I was hoping the full change including fluid would sort that out but they still need to be pressed down 10-20% before I even feel them! Also no signs of leaks in the system from a test - Pump pedal until firm with engine off, Start engine and the pedal sinks a bit but stays firm at a point, Switch off the engine and the pedal didn't sink at all. However when the engine is on, I can sometimes pump the pedal so it gets very firm at the top of the pedal travel, but other times I pump and it doesn't?

I drove a 3 year old Auto VW Jetta and boy! It was only the baby diesel engine but even tapping the brake pedal a few mm you can feel it significantly. I was looking for something like that on the veccy though?


Is this normal for the smaller Vectra brakes or do the pads just need bedding in before this will happen [driven 50-60miles]?
