Default FUEL TANK on CDTI Estate 150 - what size it ????!!

I have a 58 Plate CDTi 150 Design Estate and even when the fuel gauge is on Red I can still only get around 45 L in to the Tank
    BUT
The Handbook states the Tank as having a volume of 60 L
    So where's my missing 15 L
Fuel consumption is around 48 mpg and car has done 15k miles

Dealer had a look on the cars first service but they said nothing was wrong and that the 15 L was the volume past the red mark on the fuel gauge.........

Any thoughts as to whats going on

    I have a 3.0CDTI Elite Estate.

When my range says 10 or so miles left I too can only get about 45-50 litres in the tank - the tank should be 60 litle I think.

As most will keep going well past the 0 on the trip meter it makes you wonder what level of safety they built in for fuel reserves.

In theory then you should be able to get 158miles out of reserve (@ 48mpg).... I thought most cars would give you a rough 60miles, but that's massive!!!

Maybe explains why the top gear guys got from Basel to Blackpool on one tank...
