    Default Service indicator

If this displays 21000 does it mean that the service is due at 21000 miles or that the service is due in another 21000? The car has never been serviced and has currently done 17K so I assume it needs servicing in 4000 miles.

The 21000 is miles until next service. That's indicating that you're on ECOFlex, that it's just had a service and the counter has been reset (as 21000 is the max figure). I'm assuming this is a recently bought car? If so, I'd double check that they actually did the service (at the very least oil change and filter) and didn't just reset the ECOFlex counter.

I had this issue when mine came up for it's first service at 14 months. The odometer showed 20,000 but the service indicator said I could drive another 2,000 miles before a service is due. Beware! The warranty demands a service at 20,000 miles (petrol models) regardless of what the display says (which is only a guide and can be reset by naughty folk). Whatever people say, if you had a major failure at (say) 25,000 miles, they'd ask for your service book and check their records to see that the car had been serviced at the right interval and if they saw that you'd gone 2,000 miles over their recommendations, they'd be entitled to refuse the claim. Once the warranty has expired it doesn't matter, but personally I feel that 20,000 is more than enough for a sump full of oil anyway!!!

Thanks will drop it off at 20K, wasn't convinced that even the 3.2 V6 could go 37K without a service.

ECOFlex servicing on diesels is 30,000miles or two years. Whether you're happy to go that long without changing the oil is up to you, but I personally think it's a little too long.
I suppose if your car uses a little oil, then as you are adding fresh throughout the period, that's not too bad....but if (like on mine) you don't need to add any between services, then the oil really is getting old and past-it by 30,000 miles.

    20,000 Miles..

call it a waste but the oil in our cars is dropped out every 6K miles or 3 months.. Using genuine VX parts you don't invalidate your warranty.. Even though Vx say you can go to these mileages i think that this is aimed mainly at fleet operators to minimise servicing during the lease period..

Being a more mechanically sympathetic owner i could never leave it that long..
