hissing noise

recently bought vec 2.2 dti sxi, accept my apologies if this thread as been posted earlier. this being my first diesel in 24 years of driving, i,ve noticed an hissing noise when i change gear, basically is this normal, my 18 year old son (new ford fiesta ha ha, 0 to 60 in 3 weeks ) know all, told me its the dump valve, if on this occasion, he turns out to be right, perhaps i,ll forget to tell him.

I think that's right, either that or you have a snake in the car

He's not too far wrong, it's from the wastegate of the turbo and perfectly normal. It's the built up air in the turbo being released to atmosphere when the throttle is closed. It prevents the turbo from kind of clogging itself with air and not responding.

Little bit like a dump valve, but not quite!
