Default Went to Richmond Park today

and while the subject maybe a little boring to some I had great fun with my Nikon.

I started using RAW today and while I have no idea about it, it does seem to give much better results than fine JPEG having said that you can't do RAW on slide shows etc nor upload them on photo bucket so had to convert them to jpeg but here a few of the ones I took today,

    Damn right!!

Some nice pics there Perry, caught some expressions/moments rather nicely.

As for RAW, consider it as a digital negative (like if you were shooting colour negative film). The negative isn't much use until you process it and make a print. The quality of your 'print' i.e the JPEG/TIFF that end up with after processing is dependant on how good the software is, what features it has and how the user applies and interprets all the settings.

Looks like you're using Adobe Photoshop CS2 from what I can make out on the file properties - and that has a decent RAW converter built in and you can see that in the results you've got. It's just a matter of playing around a bit more with the settings - some of those for example may have benefited from being a bit lighter and a smidge more contrast, but that's maybe more of a personal thing - certainly not any sort of 'criticism'

So, it's just a case of keep doing what you're doing. You seem to have a good sense of timing to capture some of those, as well as some nice compositions.

If you were wanting to take your RAW processing to the next stage, I could show you the results from the software I use - it's significantly better then Photoshop as the modules you download are matched to your camera and the specific optics of the lenses you are using (the latter Photoshop doesn't do - it just converts the RAW file based on the camera) so it will automatically adjust for the optical characteristics/distortion of the lenses.

Feel free to send me a couple of those shots (maybe the swan one and the last bird one and I'll zip you back/post up) the results if you like.

Nice shots Perry. I use RAW all the time now as well, so much more you can do with the shots. I tend to convert to TIFFs for quality and JPEGs for smaller size for posting and emailing etc.
