Default Fuel Filter Meant To Be Black?

Just changed the fuel filter on my 1.9cdti, has got 90k on the clock and the old filter was jet black, blacker than my engine cover!

When I pulled it out, it was like a cup of diesel as all the crud was holding the diesel and preventing it from leaking through the filter element!

Do you think it has ever been changed in the cars 90k life?

I just wonder as the one in the How2 was only slightly brown and hadn't been done for 30 odd thousand miles if I remember rightly!

Filter housing was really welded into the crash box too, took a bit of wd40 and wiggling to get it out!

Going to start changing it everytime I service it now. Been putting it off as all I read is it's a pig to change but it wasn't that bad!

Ahh well, oil and all other filters next weekend!

Mine was like green sludge when I took mine out, it looked like it had done the majority of the 130k, ran loads better straight away. Gonna keep on top of mine and do it a couple of times a year aswel.

Mine was like that too. When changed, the motor ran 100% better, and used less diesel too

Anywhere between 10 and 20 squid. The 1.9 can be a ***** to change due to the screw-on top and the crash box, but at least it operates on positive pressure. The 3.0 is a piece of cake to change with the screw holding it all together but selling it so it doesn't get any air in through the seal with the suction pressure can be a nightmare...

Take a look at the receipts and check the Fuel Filter is listed
Check the OE Service Schedule, but from memory it can be every second service depending on mileage which could be up to 40K miles for some cars
