I don't use 3M but usually the colour code is for th different pad functions, hard cut, soft cut, polish only (no cut), does it not state which?

They are terrible when used via a DA, I only use 3m pads with rotary. You will struggle to beat CG's pads for a DA.

I don't use 3M pads, I use the hexlogic ones. Main three I use are orange (medium cutting) for cutting back paintwork, blue (medium polishing) for polishing after cutting and black (finishing) for final polishing and sealing/glazing (although I usually do the sealant/glaze by hand).
Edit: CG = Chemical Guys, they make the hexlogic pads
