1.9CDTI 120 - Rattle on idle (NOT a DMF problem!)

All,

I have a slight rattle coming from the engine bay on idle – anyone ever had this? Symptoms are..

• Only appears when warm
• Pressing/releasing clutch makes no difference
• Slightest blip of the throttle and it goes away

It sounds like something is loose, but everything seems sound enough. Its very frustrating as the noise is much less noticeable under the bonnet! FWIW, been like this at least since xmas..

Any takers?

Valve tappets or lifters? But I think you'd hear that from the engine bay.

I did the valve clearances approx 18 months ago. So I doubt if its that, but worth a check especially seeing as it only happens when warm (N.B the 120 does not have hydralic lifters, unlike the 150)

Sounds distincly like a noise coming form outside the engine, not inside it, if you know what I mean.

Sorry to lift an old thread but mine does this too. Had the cambelt, tensioner and water pump done last year. Had the aux belt, alternator and pulley replaced last week and she's still making a rattle on idle. Like you if I touch the throttle she goes quiet. So I'm thinking crank pulley. Did you manage to get yours fixed or can anybody else she'd any light on this? The sound does sound like it's an external noise too not a tappety noise more of a knock

turned out to be the flexi-pipe in the end. Noticed it was blowing very slightly, replaced it an cured the rattle at the same time!
