    Default Smoking engine? 1.9cdti

Not sure what's going on here, but my Signum cdti 150 keeps smoking quite badly.
I had to pick the mother in law up from Asda the other day, and as I pulled up on the car park, plumes of diesel smoke were rising up from underneath (around the back of the engine/cat area) and to be fair, it was a tad embarrassing.
It also has days where smoke billows out from under the plastic engine cover, which on further inspection, is coming from the recess around the swirl flap bar, which currently is broke off, and lay on its side.
It smoked again yesterday quite heavily from this area, and filled the inside of the car via the vents with diesel fumes, which considering my 5 month old baby was sat in the back,, was not a good thing.
I have now pulled out the swirl bar, and am looking to do the cheap repair, but have no idea why the car is throwing all of this smoke out.
Oh, and at its worst yesterday, I pulled away after stopping to check, and left a cloud of smoke behind via the exhaust.

    Any ideas guys?
    Cheers,
    S.

IF it smells like diesel mate - stop driving it!

The diesel filter is above that area - are you sure you dont have a leak

Something somewhere must be leaking to generate smoke.. Are you loosing coolent? Does the smoke fumes always smell like diesel..?

It smells like diesel mate, but saying that, burning oil smells very similar I suppose, so I'm not sure.
    The coolant seems ok.
I was suprised just how much was rising up from the swirl flap linkage bar area yesterday.
It's nothing to do with the EGR is it?
Any ideas what the diesel filter looks like, and ill check.....

    Cheers,
    S.

Also down below the inlet is the oil filter housing and under that is the exhaust.. Wonder if you have an oil leak and its dripping on the exhaust and burning..

The fuel filter is the black cylinder looking thing attached to the bulkhead with two fuel hoses going to the top - they have blue clips.

Has the flexi pipe gone on the exhaust? Either ways I would be getting some one to check this out as its difficult to find out what this is without having the car in front of you. What about a video?

I need to book the car in for a service, and it looks like ill be using Vauxhall, so it might be worth mentioning it to them. However, after previous faults diagnosed my my local Vauxhall for hundreds of pounds, have been rectified by me for pennies, I'm rather reluctant to use them. To he honest, Telford it would seem is full of dodgy garages

I did think that it may be oil dripping on the exhaust, and this may still be the case, but it doesn't explain why its rising from where the swirl bar sits mate :/

I was told a while ago that the flexi looked like it had a small leak, but after having an exhaust bracket welded on by a local company, I asked them to check it and they said it seemed ok?
Would this cause it to smoke this bad, and is it an expensive fix to get replaced mate?

    Cheers,
    S.

If the swirl bar is broken, then repair that first
Most likely this is causing the engine to over-fuel, hence the smoke and smell
Once the swirl bar has been repaired, compare

Access to the underneath of the car is poor (with the covers in place)
Check for excess oil from the underside

Righto, ill get over to B&Q, grab some 3mm washers and crack on with the repair. Hopefully it will sort the issue, but the bad luck I've had with the car since first taking ownership,......I doubt it :/
Failing that, it will eliminate it as a problem.

    Cheers,
    S.

Depending on the movement with your swirl flaps, Depends on the repair.

The B&Q fix is only good if the siwrl valves are sealed still, If not, its not really any use, and may be worth considering sealing them in the open position fully, without the bar, leaving number 3 to move freely. (there is a thread on this some where)
