    No.

The 2.2 direct has slightly more BHP.
It also has a direct injection system, which the earlier 2.2 didn't. Some might say this is a good thing because no mechanical high pressure fuel pump and regulator to go wrong on the non direct version.
The direct also has twin exhausts.

Absolutely, I really like my direct. The 'direct' injection comes into its own on longer runs, that's where the saving in fuel is supposed to be, not short runs, so I've read somewhere.

I have 22se (2.2 non direct) 5 speed manual, and to be honest i'd rather have that over a direct as theres less to go wrong! (THIS IS MY OWN PERSONAL VEIW) As the 2.2 Direct suffers from high preasure fuel pumps which cost £250 (TRADE) a shoot and there's no telling how long it will last even when replaced and inlet manifolds, having swirl flap problems. which can end up costing a fortune.

Ive driven both back to back on a number of occassions and theres not alot performance wise, the direct does feel a little stronger power wise, but in the grand scheme of things, i'd rather have a decrease of 5-6 bhp and not have the cost of replacing those items tbh! my 22se (non direct) does 29.8 to the gallon on my normal day to day use and on a long jorney will average high 30's very low 40ish (driving like a nun) Also ive fitted a 2.0 turbo exhaust so ive got twin exhausts and using that system it sides lovely over the 2.2 mid section pipe

There is one bad point to both these engines they can burn a bit of oil, I use a FORTE oil treatment in mine to stop this and on a whole ive had it 3 years and covered 30,000 miles of trouble free motoring!
