    Smile 1.9 8v 120 Inlet + EGR Clean a Must

Having recently had the dreaded spanner and limp mode I realised how important it is to have a code reader looking at how many issues it could be. A £35 purchase off eBay soon gave me something to work on.

The reason for my post is having owned several diesels is to highly recommend an hour getting your hands dirty and cleaning the air inlet and EGR however good you think you car is running.

A jubilee clip and 4 bolts has the inlet with butterfly off and another 6 has the EGR off. No manualy needed. Very obvious. The finding - mine is an 04 with 117k and though it was running fine until the spanner - there was a build up of 2-5mm in places of oil deposit. This was preventing both the butterlfy and plunger from closing properly.

This cost me an hours time and a can of carb cleaner. The result is amazing. Idle is smoother. Take-up is better. It can rev all the way to the red line now although I don't drive like that. Its been running with no errors and I'm seeing an increase in mpg.

Take the engine cover off, the egr valve and the boost sensor are bolted to the back of the inlet manifold.

Did mine at the weekend - and I'm an absolute novice. The EML light is still present, but the car is driving much much better for clearing the EGR and boost sensor, together with clearing the airbox and performing the small mod.

Both the same diesel When doing there's, crimp the small vacuum nipple on the EGR then put the pipe back on - a very discreet method of removing the EGR operation
