Wheel Locking Nut Key Broken :(

Things have gone from bad to worse for me, all i wanted is to put my winter wheels on. First the wheel nuts are too tight, so then i brought a electric impact wrench from ebay to free it, that didnt work, when finally got the normal nuts loose, and try to undo the 3rd wheel locking nut the lock key broke. Can it get any worse.

Anyone know how much its a replacement nut key from vauxhall?

Your better. Going to a garage getting them removed and getting some decent locking nuts.

*Personally* I would take the locking wheel nuts off and throw them away.


The vast majority of locking wheel nuts won't stop someone stealing your wheels, but will stop you changing them when you lose the key/break the key/Kwikfit guy destroys the key in his windy gun.

yes i agree with this , who nicks wheels these days they just take the whole car if they want something i cant remember the last time i heard of anyone getting there wheels swiped so i took mine off at least i know i will be able to get the wheel off on a dark motorway in ****ing rain lol

You're supposed to remove the locking wheel nut whilst the normal wheel nuts are still in place, so they're holding the wheel against the hub and not putting pressure against the locking nut.

If you have a car later than 54 plate vx have a complete set of duplicate keys to remove them and then give you a code to just buy replacment removing nut. So then get a cheaper set. If you get a nut removing agent to remove them without damaging you wheels , it will cost £25 per wheel. its cheaper to buy replacement key.

which type you got? if you havent got the spinning collar types, get a normal socket, just a shade to small to go over, and whack it on with a hammer. I got my old man to grab one from work. Doesn't take too long , just make sure you knock them on square and not at an angle and you'll be fine.

After each one i had to put the damn thing in a vice and use a thin bar to whack the nut out of the socket, so make sure you have something like a vice to hand. I jumped on a wreckin bar and used a scaffold bar as an extension on mine, so as long as you knock the socket on far enough, you can put as much force as you like on them and it wont slip (if it does, just whack it on even further and try again, took me 4 attempts on the first nut until i realised how much it needs to go on).

You could also heat the nut up prior to this with a pencil torch or arc up on the nut with a welder for a few seconds, been told this helps, but i didnt have to.
