    Default Vulcan XH558 - Air Tattoo 2011

Went to the Air Tattoo at Fairford yesterday... After an hour or so delay, things "got off the ground" and turned out to be far beyond anyones expectations a very good days flying considering the weather.

Decided not to on the showground this year, but to a small campsite on the other side of the airfield. Glad we did.. we had almost everything coming directly over the top of us including a Tornado which must have been in excess of 500kts! Wont be going on the showground again anytime soon i'm afraid.

Star of the show for me... Vulcan XH558.

If you have never seen it live, then make a point of doing so. Even though they have many hours left on the airframe, engines are their main concern with only 4 spares left available. The commentator from VTS was saying that it could only a couple of years left before she leaves the skies forever.

Saw the Vulcan at Waddington earlier this month and there is nothing like it... Immense... Amazing to think of the history of the aircraft and what it used to do...

    Yes!

Its all down to money to keep these things flying!

I personally want someone to let a lightening return to the skys too.

Nice. Love seeing these in the air. Liked the Lightnings as well, despite all the fuel leaks.
If this is the one that bombed Port Stanley (Falklands) I have a connection.
When they realised the job needed a Vulcan, the last one had just been written off for scrap, and a lot of the military stuff taken out - including the in flight refuelling gear.
It fell to my section, HQSTC Modification Control, to trawl through the archives and find the details of the original modification fitting it, so we could advise on exactly what was needed and how to replace it. The rest, as they say, is history.

I believe it was Vulcan XM607 that did that run.

Saw a Vulcan bomber at Blackpool last summer I think... awesome machine, the sound on the video (even though its a good video!) doesn't do it justice, the way you can *hear* it through your chest!
