Loss of power, engine smoking and strong smell.

Hi there,

I was driving home from work today in my 2.0DTi Signum, when I was stopped uphill at some lights. I set off and tried to drive normally through the gears. Car sudenly lost power, revving in every gear change. So I pulled over quickly and noticed smoke coming from the engine bay. I opened the bonnet and a small amount of smoke was coming from the rear of the engine bay, near the gear box. There was a strong burning smell. Got recovery,after an hour of the car cooling down, and it drove fine onto the recovery vehicle. I initially thought it was the clutch, so rang Vauxhall who quoted £650 for a new clutch. Since it drove ok since, I'm not sure what the problem is?! It's now sat at home and I don't know what to do!!! Is it safe to drive to work tomorrow? The clutch feels okay under foot. Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi, I've had the same problem tonight in my Vectra, did you find out what the problem was?

I've also been having this or a similar intermittent problem, It's happen 3 times this tear 2011. All I do is stop for a few minutes (with engine off), start and carry on my journey. I will be rectifying the problem in the next few months and will keep you posted, if I resolve the problem.
