Has it been fully serviced lately? Fuel filter, air filter, plugs etc.. I have a 1.8 and im getting a combined 39mpg at the moment, but 75% of my mileage is motorway. For town only driving you should be getting 30mpg easily.

to be honest at current prices 50 miles to a tenner is about 30mpg. I get the same, but I do virtually all short town trips. Quite often my engine doesn't even get to heat up before im there. Just let me check that, i got a 1.8 too

I remember the good old days of my Cav GSi which I would be happy with 150 miles from £10. But that was back when fuel was half the price it is now!

30mpg from a 1.8 in a big car is not bad IMO. Depending on how you drive and what sort of driving you do.

I need to get me a new BMW diesel to get 80+ mpg

The 1.8 can be quite bad on fuel due to the size of the car. But you don't say what sort of journeys your doing for that amount of fuel.

Yes on figures above you are getting 29.5 mpg. If thats all town not too bad. But if you do longe journeys on motorway 65 out of tenner is more like it. I find if i take it for a motorway run 20 quid will run to 130 miles or more.
To get mine where i am happy with it : plenty of redex, new plugs, new thermostat and temp sensor, coil pack, new oil and air filters. Also cleaned throttle body. Pump tyres up hard. But to be honest i think your problem might be fuel price.

cheers for the replies folks i do a bit of a mix but mostly around the town ,i think it is down to the size of my car to the size of the engine , through into that the crazy fuel prices...and this is what you get ...cheers again

I used to have a '53' plate 1.8, and I got 27mpg mixed driving. High-speed fuel economy is dire, and the lack of a 6th gear didn't help.

Very true. I guess it was either a cost issue or they thought the car did not have enough torque to warrant it.
