    Exhaust Gas Recirculation.

The point of the valve is to send some exhaust gas back into the intake air to be burned again when the engine is cold. This helps burn some of any unburned fuel in the exhaust gas so that ehaust emissions are lower and the engine can warm up slightly faster.

I believe all petrol engined Vectra C will have an EGR system. The position of the EGR valve will be different depending which engine you have.

The valve is about the size of your fist.

Over time, the small plunger that moves into the exhaust gases to open and close the valve, will get black and sooty. This can cause it to jam. It can help to clean the plunger on older/higher mileage engines.

It probably won't hurt to clean it say once a year.

Where it is will depend which engine you have.

1.8 had EGR until MY04, when it was deleted. This is for UK market at least. Don't really know about other engines.
