    Default EGR causing economy problems..

Ive had an economy problem for the past couple of months.., to try and solve it ive changed the air filter, fuel filter, oil, put in some treatment in the diesel..

I have a 2.0 DTI 04 plate, the ecomony used to be around 50 mpg, motorway was around 55, local around 45. however few months ago this all changed, the combined economy now is 35 mpg! in local it only around 25 - 30 mpg!!! and no ive not bought some heavier shoes

none of the above solved the problem, so i decided to take the EGR valve out and clean it even though no no EML light was on. I even cleaned the throttle body and boost sensor. To my shocking serprise the car ran like new!! it gained alot of power, acceleration made it seem like a new car. Between 1.5 - 2 k the turbo kicks in and it flys, previously this region was just steady.

Economy went upto 55 mpg! locally i was getting 50 mpg!! i was a happy man!

however after a week i noticed the region between 1.5 - 2 k went steady again.. i could no longer hear the turbo kicking in and guess wot, the car became sluggish again.. economy went back down to 25 - 30 mpg local.. but again No EML lights shown!!

im very confused.. how can an EGR valve make such a difference?? with a new EGR valve costing around £250, is it worth me forking out for one when no EML light is show..

Anyone got any advice or suggestion or anything?

I thought that if the piston was seesed up it would have through up a fault code..

Since i cleaned it thoroughly i cant see how it could get clogged up within a week especially when i cleaned the throttle body, boost sensor, even the manifold had been cleaned!

If by cleaning the EGR the car ran like new then you know its the EGR at fault. Maybe give it another clean but try not leave much grease or residue about as this can cause them to stick over a short amount of time.

I kind of made sure that there was no residue, i used a breake cleaner spray, blasted it with it and i can surely say it had a silver shine to it..!

And with it i cleaned the manifold, throttle body and boost sensor, what baffles me is how can the MPG halve and no fault codes come up..

Ill see if i can source a second hand one, if i can then ill see if that solves the problem...

anyway can the DTI version of the EGR valve be taken apart? i know the CDTI version can..
