rolleyes 1.9 CDTi (150) with spanner light...

I know there are lots of threads on this and I have read through them.

The spanner light came up last night when I clicked the ignition over to position 2 and it came on. When I started the car it then went off. However, it's on every time I start the car now, but goes off when I start the car. I've done some reading and it could be water in the fuel filter or a faulty glow plug

So to find out what it was I tried reading the codes myself using Ste's How2 but this hasn't worked and didn't bring up any code

Anybody offer any relief from my worry?

Does it go off when the other lights TC etc goes prior to starting, or does it stay on after the other lights have gone off? If it's the latter it will most likely be a store code.

First port of call, try disconnecting the battery to reset the light. If there is a propper fault it will come on again. More than likely a red herring though

Mines does this occasionally m8 I personally wouldnt worry. The spanner light will come on on start up as there will be a fault code, but as you say there isnt anything coming up then I wouldnt worry. As for trying the brake/throttle pedal thing for fault code reading I cant get it to work on my CDTI so it may not work on yours.

If the car isnt going into limp mode and the light is not staying on then it could be a glitch.

Just an update from today. Took the car out and the light is still there but it's a bit strange.

    It changes it's mind occasionally.

    1) I can turn the ignition to number 2, then all other lights go out (apart from the normal engine light etc...) and the spanner will be there. When I turn the engine on the light goes out.

    2) Same as above however, when I turn the engine on the light stays on and will go off after a few minutes when driving down the road.

    3) Same as number 1 & 2 however, when the engine is on and the spanner light is on I can turn off the car, then start it up again straight away and then there will be no spanner light.

Is it worth trying to disconnect the battery and reconnect it or could it be water in fuel filter or glow plugs need changing?

Have you fitted the EGR blanking mate?

When it shows a spanner and then goes out once started it means that there is a stored fault - but that fault is not present. When it stays on it means the fault is present

That's one thing I was thinking. But I've had the large one fitted for nearly 6 months now and the smaller one has been fitted for a week. I thought the engine management light would come on if there was a problem with the EGR though, no the spanner light?

Have you checked the manifold hasnt sooted up a bit, enough to reduce the egr flow?

Tbh if the blanks are causing problems, contact a dealer and see if you can get the EGR valve switched off via tech2.

Defo Spanner light mate with a P04nn code that relates to the EGR functions.

Mine threw the spanner straight away when I put the large one on on firing the car up..

Wonder if you are just on the limit of flow for it to trigger the light,

You really need the codes read - do you have any means to do that? that will tell you for sure.

Cheers for that mate. Got no way of reading the codes. As I said earlier I tried Ste's how2 but that didn't work

I might hang in and see how it goes, it might stop bringing up the spanner light, if not I might take the smaller blanking plate off.
