Hi - anyone any thoughts / recommendations on this. Our living room and conservatory floors and rooms in general always feel cold. I've pulled back the carpet / underlay and the floors are just chipboard. I'm guessing that a lot of the cold just comes up through here and makes the rooms feel cold.

I'm wondering if it would make any noticeable difference if I put a layer of 5mm fibreboard as used with laminate flooring down first, then put the underlay and carpet back down - as a fairly easy and cheap DIY job?

There's no noticeable drafts now either ... as I spent an age sorting all those out!

I used to have laminate flooring throughout my house (previous owner did it). I eventually replaced all the upstairs bedrooms with carpet and underlay.

I removed all the fibreboard with exeption to the front guest bedroom as its over the internal garage. (Cold radiating from below) so I left the fibreboard down, then underlay, then carpet.

I cant honestly say I've noticed any difference other than you have to step up 5 mm into the room from the landing (because its slightly higher with the fibreboard underneath). Which means the door had to be shaved a bit more on the bottom to clear the carpet.

Its certainly not cold in that room, but I dont know how much that contributed as I also fitted the loft out with Natural Sheeps Wool loft insulation around the same time, and had new windows fitted

What's under the chipboard? If it's joists and then a gap to the ground below, you should fill the gap between the joists with rigid insulation.

or fill the gap with concrete

if it is chip board then im betting its concrete floor mate with waterproof membrane over top then chipboard, hence why its so cold. you can get a special foam to put down under carpet/laminate which is a proper insulating layer makes a hell of a difference like
