Unhappy Deformity in the tyre wall...

I noticed today whilst I was looking over the car a slight deformity in the tyre wall of my front off-side tyre. It's a Goodyear NCT 5 (I'm assuming it is the original tyre - my Vectra is a 53 plate).

If you look at the attached picture it's visible on the top of the "E" of "Good Year", a small pea-sized bulge. I'm thinking I should be worried, am I right?

yes, bulge in the sidewall - not good.

Sidewalls are only 1 or 2 ply. The air pressure is forcing the sidewall out. Inside the sidewall is damaged usually from going up a kerb too fast.

Can mean 3 points from the police.

    really needs to be changed............

    Henry Nollocks! more outlay!

    ...but thanks guys

I was quite shocked when I saw it. I've only had the car two months and the two rears were replaced with some unbranded tyres during it's MOT (which it passed!).

Is it worth replacing both fronts at the same time?. They're both NCT5's and been on a few years I reckon.

Any recommendations? probably end up going to a Kwik Fit or ATS, there is an Alba Tyres nearby but its not open Sundays so couldn't get them done tomorrow.

If I end up getting the alternate tyre size (is it 225/45/R17?) is it safe to have these on the front and 215/50/R17 on the back?

Best practice says the new tyres go on the rear,so fit the 225 on the rear and put the 215 on the front.Just stick to a known make,if you ain't heard the name, choose something else.

...so it's swoppsies with the rears (which have only been on two months) and put the new 215 on the front?

A quick squint at the Kwik Fit website suggests they only have the NCT5 on 215 at a staggering £140 per corner. ATS Euromaster come up with Michellin Primacy, not sure if they are any good.

So you reckon its best to go all out and replace both front and not just the one?

I don't think I will be, it's just a question of what the places around here can do on 215/50/R17. I'm going to wait until tomorrow morning and do a bit of ringing around at work to see what people have got, think I'll give the local Alba Tyres a call first. Not sure whether to replace both fronts or just the defective one though.

Yep replace the pair, you can keep the other one as spare or use it to replace your skinny spare.Muffking had 4 Michelin pilots for sale, fit these and then sell your nearly new budgets then you'll have four matching tyres.

I've just had a quick look on the National Tyres website, £170 for one NCT5! Scandalous. There was an Avon tyre too which was more expensive still.
