    Default Blu Ray

I'm wondering if a blu ray player reader/writer is just another DVD player with a new firmware?

After all the guts must be the same, you have a laser eye and thats the point of read or write isn't it.

blu ray has more capacity and uses a different laser technology, it has a shorter wavelenth than normal so can store up to 25 gb or up to 50 gb when double sided.

The laser is a different wavelength, and the "track" spiral is much closer together.

So yes, a more precise DVD player mechanism with a new laser, plus more advanced encryption and de-encryption algorithms to make it much harder for you to errm, "back up", Blu Ray discs.
