I'm wondering if a blu ray player reader/writer is just another DVD player with a new firmware?
After all the guts must be the same, you have a laser eye and thats the point of read or write isn't it.

blu ray has more capacity and uses a different laser technology, it has a shorter wavelenth than normal so can store up to 25 gb or up to 50 gb when double sided.

more info there
The laser is a different wavelength, and the "track" spiral is much closer together.
So yes, a more precise DVD player mechanism with a new laser, plus more advanced encryption and de-encryption algorithms to make it much harder for you to errm, "back up", Blu Ray discs.
dv.
As above and its called bluray as the laser is blue and not red like a conventional unit.
That is a useless peice of information!
But are blu ray disc,s only compatable with other blu ray machines.??
