Default Can you diagnose this brake problem?

    Vectra 2004 v6 Diesel estate.
It failed the MOT on a rear o/s brake leaking.
Brake was replaced. Picked car up and I notice the brake peddle with engine running has more travel than it did.

    Not bled properly I thought.
Turned the engine off. then the brake peddle goes hard when pushed as expected as no servo action.
Start the engine again and the brake peddle slowly sinks to the floor (almost). Is this leaking master cylinder seals, assuming there are no other leaks of course? Just air, as the servo will be adding a considerable compression?

I noticed this on my DTi when I first got it (my first diesel car) and was assured that this is normal for diesels. It's due to the difference in the vacuum system compared to petrol engines, I believe. The pedal should go hard when the engine is off (like a petrol) but will slowly sink to the floor under continuous pressure when the engine is running (unlike a petrol).

I'm not saying you don't have a brake problem but what the brake pedal is doing is probably normal. Can you remember what it did before you had this problem? It sounds like it may need more bleeding and/or brake fluid top-up though if the pedal moves further that it did previously before the brakes start to work.

Sounds like diesel creep and its perfectly normal, as long as it firms up with the engine off.

The fact that it feel softer than before then is probably due to air in the system. The pedal creep is normal. Thanks

    It even has a name

Perhaps back to the garage for a re-bleed and brake fluid top-up?

Not just diesels. Pedal will gradually creep on petrol cars when engine is on.

No harm. Simply say to them that the brakes feel softer since they worked on them and can they check/rebleed them.

Not if you say the pedal feels softer, I'd except them to rebleed it again

Thinking about it, isn't this what is know as a 'progressive brake pedal'? I think I remember that being the term used when I queried mine, but that was a long time ago. I didn't know it was the same now on petrols as on diesels.

As above, the re-bleed and top-up should be free.
