    Default fuel cards

    hiya,

Just wondering if anyone knows of any personal fuel cards? I am a full time employee (not self employed etc) and do about 30k a year. Just wondering if I can get like a pre-paid fuel card or something to make managing money a bit easier.

Basically at the moment I pay for fuel personally and claim it back off my employer but it means I'm out of pocket until I get it back.

    Thanks.

just a thought but why not ask your employer to get you a fuel card? it's a bit unfair to ask you to shell out all that money on fuel and have to wait to get it back, i'm sure they won't mind given the current climate....

Tesco and Morrisons both do a fuel card
However, you MUST pay the balance on the statement

Most other fuel cards now require the business to be VAT registered or a sole trader with at least 3 years records

The alternative is to keep one credit card specifically for fuel purposes
Equally, retaining all vehicle receipts (see below)
Employers require VAT receipts, but you also require this if you want to claim FPCS

As an employee using your own car for your employers business purposes I assume you are paid :
a fixed monthly payment for the car
    a fixed mileage rate
upgraded your insurance to include Class 1 or 2 business use (as appropriate)

If this is the case, then I assume you are claiming FPCS from the Inland Revenue?

As somone who uses their car every now and again for work purposes (travelling to training and meetings or 'exercises' up north) would i need to know about this FCPS ????

You are using your own car for yours employers business purposes
To qualify you need to be driving to/from a different location (ie not commuting)
You then claim the difference between the FPCS rates and what the employer has been paid, for tax relief (about 10% of the cost)
For a driver doing 30K miles a year this is about £1000 a year

Alternatively, if you submit Tax Returns regularly with FPCS your tax code can be adjusted so that you pay less tax as you go along rather than getting the refund at the end of the year
I've just had mine for 2008/09 and calculated mine to within £40 (actual £917)

    IMO

It would be in your employers interest to get you a fuel card, I assume you are not the only person claiming fuel costs?

I work for a carrier company and we had Red Diesel cards, esso cards, keyfuels and routemate cards.

These are all useable in most filling stations and because they are bulk companies you do not pay the pump price but get a discount (think we are paying abouy 90-95p a litre). The card can be registration stamped and you tell the cashier your mileage so your boss can check up on you.

Failing that, one of those 'pre-paid' visa card things.

Employers issuing fuel cards to employees for their own private vehicles are very rare
The usual route is to option the employee; company car with benefits, or their own under the FPCS
Different with business type vehicles (vans, etc), couriers, owner-operators, and so on

The advantage of FPCS is you can use your own vehicle, and in the event of termination of employment retain it for your next employment
The disadvantage is you are personally responsible for all costs
It is also known that some employers penalise at a daily rate for failure to work due to vehicle failure
