Default 2.0 DTi poor cold idle and rising oil level?!?

Evenin all. Took my car in to a local garage for 2 tyres and an oil and filter change. After the change, the engine was great! a lot quieter, and pulled better.

However, a few days later, i started the engine in the morning, and noticed that once the revs settled to there usual 750ish rpm, a loud vibration could be heard from the engine. Popped the hood, and the sound appears to be coming from the rocker cover (i have the plastic cover removed - ongoing issues with splitting turbo boost hoses!) I got back in the car and pressed on the pedal slightly, to raise revs to 950rpm, the vibrating dissapeared, but a rattle can still be heard.

Also the idle isnt smooth. every second or 2, you can hear the engine miss slightly, not a full misfire, but a partial, and there is a faint 'bump' felt in the car. Once the engine is warm, the missing dissapears, but the rattle can still be heard at idle.

Now to the oil level, When i had the car back, i checked the oil level, saturday morning, flat level ground, engine off for 12hr+ The oil was just on the max line (this was before the rattle)

Now, the oil is about 8-10mm ABOVE the max line (0.4L?) when checked in the same way.

Now the sump is 5.5l, but the garage said they put a full 5l can in, so it should read halfway between the max/min lines

And before you ask, no oil in the water, and no white cream in filler cap

    I'm thinking cam chain/snapped lifter/blocked injector?

    PS, car is 2.0DTi, 96k 2003 model

    thanks all

Well too much oil is as bad as too little you need to get ride of the extra oil for starters, what about the cam tensioner?

The cam tensioner? i assume you mean cam belt tensioner. Mines cam chain, with no easy access to the chain at all. i'm not even sure if the dti has a tensioner

I remember reading somewhere on a forum (may have been this one, not sure) about someone's car where the oil level kept registering as being too high, even though he took some out several times. Turned out diesel was mixing with the oil.

Check the oil with the engine hot

I would have disagreed with my own statement but VX recommend that the oil be check when the engine is at operating temperature

As for the rattling, it may be possible that the wrong engine oil has been used

As above, run engine up to temperature and park somewhere level, switch off and allow 5 minutes to drain and check the oil level. If the oil level isn't rising due to diesel getting into it then the problems you have might just be down to too much oil.

My DTi really wasn't keen on running with too much oil. I drained some out out and it ran much better.

The garage had just put 5 litres in as your garage did. This is too much and goes up past max on the dipstick - now that I service the car I put in 4.5 litres and then check/top up in 100 ml increments until it's just over half way between min and max on the dipstick.

I know too much oil causes pressure problems, but what would cause the deisal to mix with the oil?

Why would the rAttle dissapear when the engine gets hot?

    Thanks all for your replys.

The only way that you can get oil dilution is for the fuel to be getting past the piston ring pack.

If power is OK and there is no crankcase pressure, then it is doubtful.

Not true about the piston rings being the only way, here's another:

"The DPF also has an active function, where extra diesel is injected into the combustion chambers to create enough heat to burn off the particulates as it is exhausted.
If it doesn’t burn completely, the excess diesel sinks into the engine sump where it contaminates the lubricating oil and raises the level."

So how does it sink into the engine sump from the power cylinder? Past the ring pack perhaps? I haven't seen many pistons with holes in them by design (apart from oil drains from scraper ring groove)

Also, DTi Don't have DPF, so no need for late injection events to increase exhaust gas temp for soot regeneration
