Which IT Course - ITILv3 vs Win Server Admin?

Ok, this my possibly go over the heads of some, but i know there are some pretty savvy IT orientated people on here.

I have the opportunity to do an IT course in the near future and i am weighing up the pros and cons of the two which i have in mind.... Courses are:

ITIL v3 Foundation & exam and a choice of following up with either capacity or lifecycle bolt ons.

or

MCITP Server Administrator with the following:

Windows Server 2008 (70-646) & Exam
Active Directory Configuration (70-640) & Exam
Network Infrastructure Configuration (70-642) & Exam

Which in your opinion would see me get better employment chances in the outside world?

(currently i am a serving soldier with good IT background)

You'll go further with the MCITP. More practical hands-on, and looks better on your CV

ITIL is more about the running of it practice's really.

So in short - I am the Support and Development manager for a ITSM Consultancy company, and if you dont have or understand ITIL - it doesnt matter how technical you are, we are not interested.

ITIL is looked for in many a company these days as IT Service Management is now such a great leaverage point between IT and the Business....

Unless you want to stay technical in one perticular area - take the ITIL V3 foundation and exam... will open doors if not now, in the future.

This might help you a little to decide, personally, depending on your age, I would take this and cherry pick capacity or lifecycle bolt ons later.

I found the MCITP confusing to follow the courses and changes they made with there being so many acronyms for everything its difficult to decides what's right.

Thanks for the replys... I think i should have been a bit more specific here. I am conversant with both servers and the ITIL process (abeit v2). I guess what i am trying to find out is which of these two qualifications is in most demand in terms of jobs available.

Not having ITIL will rule you out of many jobs, but you already have the Foundation certificate, and "upgrading" to V3 won't make much difference from a job hunting/promotion perspective, given that V3 is an extension of V2, not a replacement (i.e. all you learnt for V2 is still valid). I would suggest looking into progressing to the ITIL Intermediate certificate instead. From my experience though, interviewers aren't so much interested in which of the ITIL certificates you have, it's whether you can talk knowledgeably about it and give relevant examples of how you've applied it in real situations.

I'm an IT chap too. ITIL Foundation is all you need to be able to put that you are ITIL aware on your CV and unless you are looking for a service manager type job you don't need to take it further. I'm trawling through my MCITP at the moment, it's not easy but IMO very useful to have on your CV if you are wanting to stay technical.

ITIL foundation as said is all most people ask for. I would go for the MCITP

What everyone has said really.

All depends on what role you do/want to do. As said nearly all companies will require ITIL foundation skills as a base but if you are in a hands on tech role then thats all you need, but if not then you will need to update to v3 and take it further. I moved out of a technical role so went into the ITIL training to Manager level. So, what role do want to go into?
