Default found my noise -- help needed

my old thread from last week regarding an intermittent noise started again earlier.this time i was went to my mechanic who said it sounds like the bearing pulley on the alternator? its the freewheeling aspect as it started when we slowed down and goes when you rev up,so makes sense,so bearing is on way out.

first thing, how difficult is it to get the alernator out,as he said he will get the pulley off and wont charge me if i take it to him.
second is whats the part number for the pulley anyone.or if its meant to be a full alternator ,where can i get a pulley other than vx?
and how long should i keep driving it.it went away again so obviously isnt completely shot ,YET?

on some cars its easier to remove the offside intermediate driveshafe to drop and remove it, but that was on a 2.8T

the pulleys are pretty expensive to buy on their own, you be best either finding a alternator repairer or getting a second hand one m8

What engine do you have as there is a guide showing how to remove one from a diesel.

sorry guys ,its a 1.9 120 . what sort of time span am i looking at in terms of driving it? if the alternator can be done without the driveshaft i will have a go.i can probably get the mum in laws car for a couple of days. in terms of noise, once i put it under load it clears it up.as i tried to explain above, the way it was described to me ,it does make sense,if its freewheeling when it makes the sound but goes away when you put the car underload.he seemed pretty sure that was the problem, the bearing starting to break down and he has done a few so knew the noise..
i havent sorted my trade card yet either ffs,so gona have to pay full whack.
if anyone has any ideas let me know, but frankly whats the point of changing the alternator if it aint shagged?

should only take an hour to take out at most, 64 quid was prise i got for pully alone or 95 for a replacement altinator no drive shafts need to be removed just air box and the small inner wheel arch cover which needs to be removed to take the fan belt off.. had 5 of these pullys break up on me ( 282.000 miles) but strange thing is that when my crank pullt delaninated( rubber bits holding the two halfs together) i repaired pully by welding it so it was a solid pully and not a damped pully and since then no more broken altinator clutches i think there must be some sort of strange resonance going on with the damped pully causing the clutches to break up!!!!

so from your vast knowledge due to mileage, does this defo sound like the alternator pulley thats causing it? also how long were you running the car for till you replaced them each time? and where did you manage it for £64 lol, cheers

I have the same noise that comes and goes (Worse in the summer) and been doing it for 20k miles.

Our local refurb place fits non free wheeling ones as its not really needed. Just helps take the load off under deceleration.
